Description: Dictionary of Latin words used by authors of the Roman Republic, compiled by the Roman grammarian, Nonius Marcellus. De compendiosa doctrina consists of lists of words, their definitions, and quotations of authors using those words. Originally there were 20 chapters; the sixteenth is now lost. The first 12 chapters deal with grammar and style; in the final eight, words are arranged by subject matter such as clothing ("De genere vel colore vestimentorum"), weapons ("De genere armorum"), and food ("De genere ciborum et potuum").

Paul[us] p[ri]me cor[inthiorum]. xiiij. capite." The whole covered by the episcopal insignia and surrounded by ornamented borders. Running titles as per chapter headings. First colophon on verso of leaf k4 reads: A gloria y alaba[n]ça de dios n[uest]ro señor y de su bendita madre fue impressa esta doctrina catholica en Mexico por ma[n]dado del reuere[n]dissimo señor don fray Jua[n] çumarraga: primero obispo de la misma ciudad: p[ar]a vtilidad comun. Especial de los indios: porque por ella sean catherizados los q[ue] se ouiere[n] de baptizar: y enseñados los baptizados. The soul of Rouget De Lisle : manuscript

A signed, autograph manuscript poem; with old tape repairs, originally framed behind glass, now removed. The poem was inspired by an early incident in the First World War; Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle wrote the words and music of "The Marseillaise." This poem was published in "The Man Who Saw and Other Poems Arising Out of the War," London: John Murray, 1917.

Manuscripts

The collection consists of the original records of 93 trials from the archives of the Holy Office of the Inquisition in Mexico. The testimony of these trials (for heresy, blasphemy, violation of ecclesiastical vows, witchcraft, Judaism, and other charges) reveals much information about ethnic groups and manners and customs in colonial Mexico. Also included are facsimiles of portions of the Libro Primero de Votos. There is also a booklet done by José Guadalupe Posada, "Biblioteca del Nino Mexicano: La Victoria de Tampico y el Martir de Cuilapa," 1900.
