This large encyclopedia of natural, moral and legal knowledge was drawn up by an Italian Dominican preacher to provide ready anecdotes or concrete illustrations ("exempla") to support the moral points of medieval sermons. Book II of the ten books covers metals and stones and Book IX deals with curious inventions and inventors.
