Sample book of bookbinding tools owned by Hazel Dreis. The tool marks are arranged by type and size, and individual tool marks are numbered. Inked in black ink, with typeset section heads. Arrangement: Grolier, Corners, Flowers, Leaf, Circles-Dots, Large-Tools, Small-Tools, Wheels, Palette Line; Palette Border-Tools, Curbes-Gouges, Type. Laid-in are materials and correspondence relating to both Hazel Dreis and her husband Edward McLean. The materials and sample book were collected by Clark Kimball who originally purchased the "Tools" book from Oak Knoll books in 1984. Additional materials include: Pamphlet for "Workshop for Librarians & Bibliophiles : the care, case binding and repair of books & basic principles of preserving historical documents, June 9-27, 1969" to be held at Duke University under the direction of Edward McLean. Letter addressed to Hazel Dreis from W.H. "Bill" Bond librarian at Houghton Library, Harvard, dated 22 September 1946 discussing some bookbinding jobs she was doing for Harvard. Correspondence to Clark Kimball from Philip A. Knachel, Associate Director of the Folger Shakespeare Library, dated January 6, 1983 regarding the employment of Hazel Dreis and Edward McLean at the Folger from 1945-1948. Correspondence to Clark Kimball from Caroline Schimmel, Guild of Bookworkers, dated 17 April 1983 regarding entries in the Guild's archives about Dreis and McLean. Bookdealer's description for the "Dreis-McLean Collection" (books and ephemera from Dreis' reference collection which passed on tho her husband after her death). Sample layout for cloth binding design: brown and red cloth in geometric pattern, pasted onto black construction paper. Numerous photocopies of various newspaper articles relating to Edward McLean's bookbinding career.
