Letters regarding French bookbinding
Manuscripts
The majority of this correspondence is written to Robert Hoe, book, manuscript and art collector, American businessman, and the head of R. Hoe & Company. The correspondence, which is all written in French, concerns bookbinding and often specific consignments (proprosed treatments, payments, shipments, etc.) on books sent to the binders by Hoe. The letters are written by several notable French bookbinders including: Émile Carayon (1), René-Victor Chambolle (5) and his son René (1), Adolphe Cuzin (3), Francisque Cuzin (5), Antoine Joly (15), and Léon Maillard (3). Many of the letters are addressed solely to "Monsieur," but are probably also written to Hoe.

An abstract of the accompt of paymts. made by the right honourable Edward Seymour Esquire Treasrr. of his Mate. Navy betweene the 12th of July 1673 and the 31th [sic] Decembr. 1674
Rare Books
Account, written in two columns in a fair hand, of payments made by Edward Seymour on behalf of the Royal Navy from 12 July 1673-31 December 1674. Bound in black leather onlaid with red and tooled in gold to a panel design using small massed tools. Marbled end papers and gilt edges. Ms. note and dealer's description tipped in attribute binding to Samuel Mearne (1624-1683), the royal binder noted for "cottage style" bindings. A later laid-in note identifies the binder as William Cox, d. April 1709 (see The Book Collector, Winter 1977, p. 566). However, the tools used are not consistent with either's work. The tools seem to be consistent with those of the individual known as the "Naval Binder" at work in London from about 1675 to 1682. (See Foot, M. The Henry Davis Gift: a collection of bookbinding, v. II, no, 122, 123). Housed in a blue cloth box.

Earthward : tools of Great Dixter
Rare Books
"The Earthwards pictures started by chance, when Steve Pyke was watching a gardener at work with his garden fork, and was struck by its simple beauty. Photographed at Great Dixter in East Sussex, England – home of the late Christopher Lloyd – garden tools are presented here as a celebration of the way things wear and how, over time and with use, they become seemingly 'rounder.' Some of these tools were those used in the actual creation of the gardens, which were mostly designed by Edwin Lutyens almost a century ago. Their handles and prongs are beautifully worn, perfectly in keeping with the hard work and dedication involved in the making of this universally admired landscape. So much of what we see in the workplace today is about distancing ourselves from the end result of our labors; these garden tools, although depicted on their own, against a pale backdrop, convey an intense sense of physical engagement"--Publisher's description.
