Some technical terms of Chinese painting

    Rare Books

The list is not exhaustive--it does not include the special type forms and techniques of the painting of faces and of such individual plants and flowers as the bamboo, plum and orchid, which have their own disciplines. It does not include the terminology of asethetics or any inquiry into the history of either the terms or the ideas, materials and practices they represent. It is the outgrowth of practical inquiry rather than of systematic literary searching -- Preface.

    "Approach" views of billboards

    Visual Materials

This series contains black-and-white negatives (some with accompanying prints) documenting street and highway locations of client billboards in the Los Angeles region and, to a lesser extent, San Diego, 1960s to 1980s. Pacific Outdoor Advertising and Gannett Outdoor Co. used the terminology "Approach" (abbreviated APPR on negative envelopes) to describe the street-level view of a billboard as seen on "approach" by a driver. The companies often shot sequences of 2-5 images to capture various distance sight lines of an approaching billboard. This is the only collection series that notes specific intersections and major thoroughfares, freeways, and streets along which billboards appear. Locations as indicated on negative envelopes have been transcribed below only for boxes 89-90.

Henry Wetherbee letter to Schuyler Colfax

    Manuscripts

In this letter to Colfax, then serving as Vice-President of the United States, Wetherbee's opinion is that "jealousy of your popularity" is the cause of the reason why newspapers are "so down on you." Wetherbee, of course, believes none of it, and would have printed a rebuttal of his own but "thought it might produce more harm than good." With printed letterhead of the Office of Macpherson & Wetherbee, Lumber Dealers.

Addicted to suicide : a woman struggling to live

    Rare Books

"This book is about an event that didn't quite take place: my own suicide. Over and over I tried to kill myself, specific acts accompanied by the mounting use of alcohol. ... The trend culminated in the events described in this book. ... The first part is a record of my despair, and at the same time an attempt to exorcise it. ... The second part of the book was written some seven or eight months later and views all of this confusion from the other end of the telescope. It is a record of synthesis, of assembly. Where there was chaos, there is now a pattern. ... I have written about what happened to me because it sheds some light on the processes of mental illness and of suicidal thinking, and we need a lot more light in that still dimly-illuminated room. More important, however, is my hope that somewhere, somehow, my story will give that extra measure of courage to some person struggling in the awful waters of despair"--From preface, dated April 1975.
