    Cardiomyopathy and myocardial biopsy

    Rare Books

The aim of this book is to give an up to date account of recent developments in the field of cardiomyopathy. Many authors, all experienced workers in their fields, - most from Germany - have contributed to this volume. It would appear that the diagnosis of cardiomyopathy is now made more often than it was 10 years ago. The reason for this is probably not that the incidence of the disease has increased, but that it is better recognized. Where conventional clinical investigation may have failed to define the underlying disease process in a given patient, improved or more widely used diagnostic tools, such as selective coronary arteriography and endomyocardial biopsies, have contributed greatly to proper diagnosis. Furthermore, uniformity of terminology has also taken place during the last few years, permitting more accurate categorization of patients suffering from this entity. The difficult subject of terminology is discussed in a special section.

The Golden Lotus : a translation from the Chinese original of the novel, Chin pʻing mei

    Rare Books

A saga of ruthless ambition, murder, and, famously, Chinese erotica, The Golden Lotus (also known as The Plum in the Golden Vase) has been called the fifth Great Classical Novel in Chinese Literature and one of the Four Masterworks of the Ming Novel. Admired in its own time for its literary qualities and biting indictment of the immorality and cruelty of its age, this Chinese classic has also been denigrated for its sexual frankness. It centers on Ximen Qing, a young, dissolute, and politically connected merchant, and his marriage to a fifth wife, Pan Jinlian, literally "Golden Lotus." In her desire to influence her husband and, through him, control the other wives, concubines, and entire household, she uses sex as her primary weapon. The Golden Lotus lays bare the rivalries within this wealthy family while chronicling its rise and fall.

The collection is divided into two series, Lockheed Corporation and Personal, with the bulk of materials concentrated in the Lockheed Corporation series. The bulk of the collection consists of photographs, correspondence, clippings, and ephemera. The collection is especially rich in photographic prints of early Lockheed aircraft, employees, and customers. The collection is small; as such, it does not document the detailed activities of the Lockheed Corporation.

The morbid anatomy of some of the most important parts of the human body

    Rare Books

The Morbid Anatomy of Some of the Most Important Parts of the Human Body by Matthew Baillie (1761-1823), published in London in 1793, was the first systematic treatise on pathology, and the first work on the subject in English. Baillie, the nephew of John and William Hunter, based most of his descriptions on observations he made from specimens preserved in John Hunter's medical museum. Though portions of Hunter's museum were lost in World War II, what survived is preserved in the Royal College of Surgeons of London.
