Reginald Fleming Johnston was a British colonial officer, scholar and a writer with a passion for China and Chinese culture. From 1919 to 1924 he was tutor and adviser to the last emperor of China. The emperor P'u-i had abdicated his throne in 1912. However, in order to ensure a rapid and peaceful transfer of authority, he was allowed to retain his title and was permitted to remain in residence. Johnston was able to observe and chronicle the last years of the Ch'ing dynasty.

Namibia : the forbidden zone

Rare Books

"Namibia, on the south-west coast of Africa, is sandwiched between two vast deserts. It is a land of amazing beauty and, quite literally, hidden gems, being one of the world's primary sources of diamonds. The sand dunes, shaped by the winds, are colored by the prevailing light. Richard Ehrlich has captured not only the breathtaking landscape but also the insides of homes occupied now only by piles of drifting sand. The colors, shapes, patterns, and small signs of former inhabitants are meticulously and beautifully recorded in this gorgeous new book"--Publisher's description.

Elegies of manumission

Rare Books

"Max de Esteban's gorgeous new monograph brings together all three parts of his stunningly beautiful 'Elegies of Manumission' series. Making use of a portraiture as a conceptual tool, de Esteban's portraits, or architectural quality and extraordinary craftsmanship, build a narrative beyond the anecdotal and push the boundaries of contemporary portraiture. Open to many interpretations, 'Elegies of Manumission' questions the construction of identity of the individual subjects portrayed"--Publisher's description.

Sea etchings

Rare Books

"This gorgeous, limited edition artist's book by Nicola Dill is a 48-page 'installation' of the artist's elegant and meditative photographs of surf grasses. Unstaged and recorded in-camera, the photographs comprising this series are gestures in patience and time. The individual pieces leave the narrative aspect of photography behind, focusing on constantly changing structures and lines, preserving on film the temporary etchings created by the surf and sandy shores of the Pacific"--Publisher's description.
