    The James William Eldridge collection consists of letters, manuscripts, documents, printed military forms, autographs, ephemera, and approximately 4000 portraits and contemporary photographs, which date from 1797-1902. The collection documents military history of the Civil War, from both the Union and Confederate sides, concentrating on commanding officers, military and naval operations and administration, the armed forces of South Carolina and Virginia, and the everyday life of the common soldiers (including prisons and medical care). Also included are materials on civilian administration and politics during the war years, concentrating on governors, mayors, and congressmen. The bulk of the collection deals with the American Civil War, although there is some material on the antebellum and post-war politics and military history, including the raid on Harpers Ferry and the post-war Navy. The collection contains materials from US presidents James A. Garfield, Ulysses S. Grant, Benjamin Harrison, and Rutherford B. Hayes.

    One manufacturer's advertisement/drawing book entitled Young Folks' Drawing Book, published by Billings, Clapp & Co., Boston, Massachusetts, ca. 1886. This advertisement/drawing book promotes both Nichol's Bark & Iron and encourages drawing practice. It is 16 unnumbered pages in length, and contains manufacturer's advertisements, testimonials (dated 1884-1886), and illustrations for copying. Each of the illustrations are printed against a numbered and lettered grid; a blank grid is printed on the facing page for copying. The front and back covers feature chromolithograph illustrations; on the front cover is an image of children drawing and playing, on the back, a young boy sits wearing a red tam and sash, with the tam bearing the name of "Nichol's Bark & Iron." None of the illustrations within the booklet have been copied. "Trautmann Bailey & Blampey, N.Y." (chromolithography) is printed at the bottom of the front cover.

    The collection consists of letters, manuscripts (including diaries and scientific reports), documents and photographs related to the life and interests of geologist Bailey Willis. Subject matter includes: the work, travels and family of Bailey Willis; geology, especially earthquakes; scientists and scientific institutions. There are also early photographs of China (1903-04) and Argentina (1911-13). Persons represented by over twenty pieces in the collection include: Charles Peter Berkey, Eliot Blackwelder, Rollin Thomas Chamberlin, Thomas Chrowder Chamberlin, Arthur Louis Day, Frederick Putnam Gulliver, Charles Willard Hayes, Stephen Joseph Kubel, Henry Fairfield Osborn, Albrecht Penck, Raphael Pumpelly, Rollin D. Salisbury, Charles Schuchert, George Otis Smith, George Willis Stose, Charles Richard Van Hise, Charles Doolittle Walcott, Bailey Willis, Cornelia Grinnell Willis, Margaret Delight Baker Willis, and Robert Simpson Woodward. Also present is a typscript letter signed from William H. Taft to Bailey Willis, 1908 December 12.

    One manufacturer's advertisement/drawing book entitled Slate Drawings for the Young Folks, published by Belding Bros. & Co., Boston, Massachusetts, ca. 1891. This 16-page booklet is a promotional piece for Belding Bros. & Co.'s silk products as well as an instructional aid. Each page contains several white-on-black illustrations, designed to represent chalk drawings on a drawing slate. Above and below each illustrated page are advertising and promotional statements about Belding Brothers & Co.'s silk thread. The front cover is designed to look like a drawing slate, with the text written on the slate. The insides of the front and back covers are advertisements, as is the back cover. "Lillian Wright, Jan. 4, 1891, Ayer, Mass." is written in ms., in pencil, at the top of the inside front cover.
