Carl van Vechten Collection of materials related to African-American arts and culture

Description: Collection of African-American theatre and concert programs, art exhibition announcements and related ephemera; examples of African-American publications, ephemera related to lectures, performances and events at Fisk University and race and social justice ephemera. Most of the material is from the New York City area, and dates between the years 1940 and 1948. Some of the African-American performers and social figures represented include: Katherine Dunham (and dance company), Clara Miles, Effabelle Davis, Emmer Booker, National Negro Opera Co., Pearl Primus, African Academy of Arts and Research, Festival Negro Chorus of New York, American Negro Theatre, Harlem Experimental Theatre, Negro Actors Guild of America, Negro Reperatory Theatre, W. E. B. Dubois, Fisk University (Nashville, Tenn.) and Carl S. Johnson.

Carl S. Dentzel Photograph Collection of the American West

Visual Materials

This collection contains 84 photographs of the American West that were collected by Carl S. Dentzel (1913-1980), director of the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles, California. The photographs date from the 1870s to the 1890s and include a disbound album of photographs of Alaska taken by A. L. Broadbent. The Alaska album (items 30-84) has a title page inscribed "Mr(?) Baldwin, Dutch Harbor, Unalaska / Compliments of A. L. Broadbent." These photographs all have manuscript captions in ink, presumably written by Broadbent. Scenes include: Alaskan natives, homes, graves; missionaries and schools; walrus hunting; whaling ships; totem poles; portraits of officers in the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service; Greek and Russian Orthodox churches; the first grand jury in Nome, Alaska; James Gilchrist Swan; and a portrait of photographer A. L. Broadbent. The other photographs in the collection are a series of Lake Tahoe card photographs; a few views of the logging industry; Kingston, New Mexico; homesteaders and miners in Oklahoma; and some portraits. Of note is a portrait of "D. S. Mitchell, Photographer" and his camera and tent in Oklahoma. Photographers who contributed to this collection include William C. Billington, Alfred Lee Broadbent, F. Davey, Edward De Groff, Charles D. Kirkland, David Sedgley Mitchell, C. H. Shaffner, Julius Ulke, and Raper James Waters.

Visual Materials

The Jay T. Last sheet music collection consists of approximately 34,950 scores dating from 1794 to 1998. It includes a wide range of American popular music styles, as well as scores published outside of the United States. The collection encompasses ballads, blues, comic songs, jazz, minstrel scores, military scores, patriotic melodies, pop, ragtime compositions, religious hymns, rhythm and blues hits, show tunes, soul music, and 1960s surf music. The scores comprise various editions of lyrical and instrumental compositions, some of which are ornately designed and, in some cases, bear the signatures of creators and performers. Many of the scores have sellers' marks printed on the covers. Some of the names found in the nineteenth-century series overlap with those in the twentieth-century series. It is also important to note that this collection contains historical images and language that some library users may find harmful, offensive, or inappropriate.
