Miss Pugsley travel album

Miss Pugsley entitled her diary: "Stepping Westward: The Log of a Spinster's Transcontinental Trip." The album opens with Pugsley leaving Boston via train and then traveling across New York, through Niagara and Detroit, to Chicago and then across the plains of Kansas to New Mexico, Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington State, and back via Canada. The album is illustrated with 60 photographs and over 40 postcards (most of which are captioned and identified). Pugsley highlights various parts of her trips including: the Harvey Museum in Albuquerque, Inscription Rock, the Grand Canyon, Hopi Indians, Los Angeles, Pasadena, the San Gabriel Mission, the beaches of Santa Monica and Venice, Hollywood, the Mission Inn in Riverside, San Francisco, Yosemite, Mt. Hood, Seattle, and Victoria (British Columbia). Much of her trip was done via automobile. A modern transcription accompanies the diary.

The group includes a handwritten draft and a typed transcript of Aldrich's manuscript entitled "Brief reminiscences of the soldiers life on the plains and in the mountains during the early days of 1867-8-9 to 70." This memoir discusses Aldrich's experiences serving as an army scout in Nebraska and Wyoming at forts along the route of the Union Pacific Railroad construction. Aldrich was assigned to Fort Laramie, Fort Russell, Fort Fetterman, and Fort Kearny. He describes his regiment's skirmishes with the Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Sioux Indians, as well as their dealings with the Pawnee scouts. Aldrich also talks about a treaty with Chief Red Cloud, his relationship with Major Frank J. North and Captain Luther H. North, and an expedition into the Yellowstone River Valley. Also included are several pieces of correspondence, certificates, and discharge papers related to Aldrich's military career and his duties for the National Indian War Veterans

Her friends, both women and men, and admirers describe their lives as they move from high school through to the early years of their careers and/or marriages. Several of the men studied at California universities following high school, while a few of the women took jobs teaching locally. The letters describe the difficulties of the authors' individual situations and discuss the courtships, engagements, marriages, studies, jobs, and friendships of Helen and her friends.
