    The manuscript volume contains recipes for foods such as rice dumplings and stew'd beef, and drinks such as orange wine and beer. The volume also contains household hints such as directions to make varnish, cement, and glue, and recipes for medicines such as the Cure for the Bite of a Mad Dog. Recipes are ascribed to many cooks such as Elizabeth Hammond's Orange Marmalade or Mrs. Zimmer's meal for two to three persons at a cost of four pence dated 1792. There are several handwritings. The book once belonged to Sir George Musgrave

The medicinal recipes include remedies for bladder ulcers, palsy, dropsy, scurvy, consumption, cough and shortage of breath. Entry #49 is the recipe for Walker's ointment, given in memory of the widow of Edward Walker of Stenhill. Entry #145 is the Duke of Berwick's physician's concoction for preservation against the pestilence that his soldiers contracted when they robbed infected houses in Marseilles. The handwriting and ink are the same throughout

    "Charming, droll, whimsical, amusing and elegantly written. An unusual (and early) book in English about Chinese food. The first nine chapters are musings on Chinese foods and dining habits. The 101 recipes (from Chapter 10 onwards) are littered with proverbs, observations and asides and interspersed with the author's illustrations and caricatures. The recipes are written longhand. Many are guidelines and lack measurements or quantities, but in most cases are useful to a sensible cook. There are useful chapters on ingredients including pricing and a glossary as well as guides on where to shop and eat (US locations in this edition, British locations in the UK edition).
