Largely based on Heinrich Steinhöwel's treatise on the plague, first printed in Ulm in 1473. Entire passages are copied verbatim. Printed on Chancery-size paper, measuring 28.8 x 20.4 cm. In double columns with 42 lines and headline to a full page; col. width: 6.5 cm.; area of text: 20.6 (21.6) x 13.7 cm. With many ornamental printed initials, some initial spaces with guide-letters, and printed fists in margins; without catchwords. Includes 23 woodcut illustrations (many repeated) of various sizes, which generally depict doctors in consultation with each other and at patients' bedsides. Cf. Schramm. Signatures: A⁴ B-G⁶. Huntington Library copy has "doch vnderwegen liess vnd" in the colophon. Initials and rubrication in red. Binding: stiff vellum.

There are several variants of this edition, which had two distinct issues. The second issue, first state, corrected minor errors in the text, but not the date of publication, expanded the content of the fourth tract, and included two additional woodcut illustrations. The second issue, second state finally corrected the date of publication to read ".M.cccc.xcvii." Chancery folio, with paper measuring 26.9 x 18.8 cm. Text printed in 2 columns of 42-43 lines and headline; col. width: 6.1 cm.; area of text: 19.6 (20.5) x 13.3 cm. With foliation and signatures; without catchwords. Includes 48 mostly full- or half-page woodcut illustrations (many are repeated). Generally, they depict the master surgeon, his apprentices, his patients, and his instruments in a variety of scenarios. There are also 3 smaller sets of illustrations of surgical instruments within the text. The second issue contains two additional woodcut illustrations.--Cf. Schramm. Numerous foliation errors. Signatures: pi⁶ A-V⁶. Imperfect: leaf pi6 lacking. Binding: 16th/17th century Italian[?] semi-limp parchment; stamped "1604" on front cover.

Chancery folio, with paper measuring 29 x 20.6 cm. Printed in double columns. Leaf C2r: 47 lines to a full column, plus headline; area of text: 22.7 (23.8) x 15.1 cm.; col. width: 7.2 cm. Printed initials and initial spaces, most with guide letters. With signatures and foliation; without catchwords. Numerous woodcut illustrations, including 6 large illustrations (leaf A1r: a garden in which plants are being harvested and distilled; leaf A2r: a teacher and four students; leaf C1r: a crowned scholar at his reading desk; leaves C4v-C5r: a banner containing a poem; leaf E1r: a kneeling young man offering a book to a king; leaf Z2r: three doctors at a patient's bedside) and many smaller ones of plants, animals and distillation apparatus. Cf. Schreiber. Errors in foliation: leaves LXXXI and CLXVIII misnumbered as LXXVII and CXVIII, respectively. Signatures: A-D⁸ E-Z⁶ 2A-2O⁶. Binding: 18th century sprinkled sheepskin.
