The collection contains records that were compiled or created by the Readers of the Huntington Library. The papers of Hensley Woodbridge contain his correspondence and drafts for his bibliography of Jack London, published in 1966. J. Kent Clark's dissertation on Jonathan Swift was begun at Stanford University, delayed by the Second World War and finished while he was working at Caltech. Beach Langston's draft of his book Faulkner, Tradition and Christian Myth contains notes in the margin on how to improve the work and two different drafts of chapter one. The magnetic and VHS tapes contain talks given by readers, including talks for the Friends of the Huntington Library, a membership organization supporting the Library.

Thesis presented by LaRoy DeVar Saline for the Master of Arts in Education degree at Arizona State College at Tempe. Focuses on the development of the Mormon-chartered St. Joseph Stake Academy (the current Eastern Arizona College), and attempts to "narrate historically six decades of [its] development as a pioneer institution...[including] the successive stages of the Institution from its parochial grammar school origin through its academic, normal, and junior college levels." Chapters include a history of the Gila Valley (focusing on Mormon settlement), the educational background of St. Joseph Stake Academy (including early education in the territory of Arizona, Mormon philosophy of education, and early education in Utah), the founding of the St. Joseph Stake Academy in 1890, and its academic evolution over time.

The collection has several strong subject points for the purpose of research including journalism and the writing process and the history of Los Angeles. There are many letters written during World War II that discuss life in America as well as abroad, especially Iwo Jima. The bulk of the collection includes correspondence to Smith from his readers, many of whom were persons of note, and Smith's own subject files of topics often discussed in his columns. The manuscripts include a number of Smith's notebooks as well as drafts of essays and monographs. The ephemera includes appearances of Smith's columns, photographs of Smith's work and family, and printed materials related to Smith's work and family life.
