  The collection consists of correspondence, essays, bibliographical notes, bound volumes, and ephemera either pertaining to or collected by Joseph C. Loughran. The majority of the items relate to Utah history from the 1860s to the 1940s and focus on Weber County, particularly the Ogden area. Items of note include genealogy records for the Fuller, Jacobs-Huntington, Hansen, and Young families; extensive bibliographical records related to Mormon history; a book of poetry and essays by Reba B. Pratt (1880); a book of annotated newspaper clippings by Mormon dissenter Lamoni Call; shopkeeper's day books and account books kept in Ogden from the 1860s-1880s and which feature entries for Lorin Farr, Edwin Smout, George Lake, Seth M. Blair, R.D. Sprague, H.B. Scovill, and others; a wage and account book for Ogden gravedigger Joseph Compton (1880-1883); a record of temple work in Ogden (c.1921-1922); record books of the Primary Association of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 11th Ward, Logan Stake, Utah (1931-1934); and a record book from the Ancient Order of United Workmen, Hall Fidelity Lodge No.3 of Ogden (1894-1900).

  The collection contains 58 pieces, including correspondence, diaries, documents, ephemera, essays, journals, legal documents, manuscripts, and reports, which were collected by O'Neil while working for the Works Progress Administration. The great majority of these materials are typescript copies. This collection focuses on Mormon history, from its earliest days through the 1930s. Every aspect of Mormon religion, daily life and cultural expression is explored, including pieces of Mormon poetry and items on the history of Mormon theater. Of particular interest are those items that portray the relationship Mormon settlers had with their Native American neighbors. Subjects addressed within the collection include the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Federal Writers Project, the Historical Records Survey, Native Americans in Utah, the Mormon Church, Mormon pioneers, Mormon poetry, Mormon social life and customs, Mormon theater, the history of Ogden (Utah), the Works Progress Administration, Utah history, Jedediah Strong Smith (1799-1831), Joseph Smith (1805-1844), Charles L. Walker (1832-1904), and Brigham Young (1801-1877). Also included are typescript copies of works by John Alexander Devan (1851-1935), Esias Edwards (1812-1897), Emma Seegmiller Higbee, Maurice L. This shows the first site of St. Mary's College of California: in 1889 the college moved across the bay to Oakland, and in 1928 it moved east again, to its current location in Moraga.   Early History of Joseph City, Arizona, in connection with the Mormon Settlement of the Little Colorado River Valley [microform] : after 1916

  Microfilm typescript of the history of settlements near Joseph City, Arizona, also called the "Little Colorado Mission." The account begins with pre-Mormon (before 1876) history of the area, including Spanish exploration and its early annexation as part of New Mexico. The next section describes Mormon exploration of the area, the first permanent settlements, and the William C. Allen Company that founded Joseph City in 1876. It also includes notes on later arrivals to the settlement through the 1880s. The section on 1876 includes notes on the construction of dams, the raising of crops and the articles of agreement for the irrigation company at Allen's Camp, the importation of mills, and the raising of forts. The 1877 section includes notes on the abandonment of the Obed settlement due to unhealthy swamp conditions, and other settlements founded that year including Taylor, Woodruff, and Forest Dale. The 1878 notes describe names given to various camps, the organization of the Little Colorado Stake, the creation of schools, floods and agriculture, and the creation of the Eastern Arizona Stake of Zion (a division of the Little Colorado). Notes from 1879 include the creation of Apache County, while those from 1881 describe the abandonment of Brigham City, the coming of the railroad, and the establishment of the mail service. The account also describes other settlements in the Little Colorado Stake, including Moan Coppy-Tuba City, Pleasant Valley, Wilford, Heber, Tonto Basin (later Pine), Savoia, Silver Creek-Snowflake, and Eagley. At the end of the typescript are "Copies of Old Manuscripts," including "History of the Little Colorado Mission" probably written by F.G. Neilson, and the United Order Articles of Agreement for Allen's Camp, dated April 15, 1877.
