Curt J. Zoller Churchill collection: printed materials and ephemera

    Rare Books

This collection contains approximately 550 printed items, covering a span of 1903 to 2010, with articles and the texts of speeches by British statesman Winston Churchill, articles and pieces of propaganda about Churchill, and a variety of ephemera and audio and visual materials related to Churchill. These materials were collected by Churchill scholar Curt J. Zoller and form a subsection of the Curt J. Zoller Churchill Collection. The focus of the Zoller Collection is the literary and rhetorical works of Winston Churchill, though they are obviously closely tied to his political life.Notably, the collection includes 165 pieces of printed propaganda leaflets from World War II, particularly in Dutch, English, French, and German. Most have a portrait, quote, or article about Churchill. Many of these fliers were intended for aerial delivery. The collection also includes issues of newspapers providing extensive coverage of the London Printers' Strike of 1911 (when Churchill was Home Secretary) and the Great Britain General Strike of 1926 (when Churchill was Chancellor of the Exchequer). The periodicals, pamphlets, and clippings in the collection are a mixture of articles and speeches by Churchill (with a large number printed in Colliers and Reader's digest), a few articles about Churchill, and international coverage of Churchill's funeral in 1965.The ephemera includes commemorative coins and trinkets, stamped envelopes, photographs of Churchill and people at Churchill-related events, reproductions of documents from Churchill's life, postcards, calendars, two LP albums, and a talking Winston Churchill action figure. The audiovisual materials include VHS tapes with programs on Churchill and recordings of lectures about Churchill, while the audio items are mostly recordings of Churchill's speeches. Some of the posters are reproductions of photographs or paintings of Churchill, while the others are informational or announce Churchill-related events. When applicable, entries include reference numbers for A bibliography of the works of Sir Winston Churchill KG, OM, CH(St Paul's Bibliographies, 1979) by Frederick Woods.
