    A painting book entitled The Easy Painting Book, published by Frederick Warne & Co., London and New York. The front cover shows two children painting the title of the book on a wall. The back cover is labeled ""A Few Practical Directions for Colouring,"" which gives directions for the mixing of colors and how to paint. The book has 23 pages with images on them. The majority of the images have been painted in, using watercolor, and some of the blank pages have been used to paint original images. There are some images done in outline form with a corresponding color image to guide the student. A ""500"" is penciled in on the upper-right corner of the title page.

    One painting book entitled The Little Folks Painting Book, by Kate Greenaway, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, ca. 1910. This book is comprised of 15 plates of black and white images of children meant for coloring; many of these have been colored in. Each page contains four labeled images, one in each of the four quadrants of a page. The front cover is a chromolithograph of several children, one of whom is painting at an easel. The back cover is an illustrated publisher's advertisement for "Pantomime Toy Books." The inside of the front cover contains text in three parts: "The Little Folks Painting Book"; "A Few Practical Directions", and "Instructions for Mixing the Colors." The inside of the back cover contains publisher's advertisements.

    One painting book entitled Outline Pictures for Little Paint Brushes, published by D. Lothrop & Co., Boston, copyright 1881. The title page is subtitled With Stories Giving Hints for Coloring, by the Editors of Babyland. The figures were drawn by George F. Barnes. The cover of the book shows a young girl sitting under a blooming tree branch using watercolor to paint in a book. The back cover features two outlined images in gold. Twelve of the fourteen images in the book are accompanied by stories which hint at which colors to use and where. All of the images have been filled in using watercolor. The note in the front of the book advises that "a good thing to do is to first copy the picture on white paper, and try colors upon that until you are suited, before painting the one in the book." One free hand image appears at the back of the book. It depicts a young lady sitting on a fence rail, looking back at the viewer over her left shoulder. The last several pages have had the corners trimmed or cut off.

    One drawing/painting book, ca. 1905, entitled Little Folks' Painting and Drawing Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York. This book is 32 unnumbered pages in length and is comprised of chromolithograph and black and white lithographs in outline form for coloring. The front cover features an image of two children wrapping a gift box. "0701, McLoughlin Bros. N.Y." is printed in the lower left-hand corner beneath the image. The back cover is not illustrated, but the paper is decorated in a simple pattern. "Directions" are printed on the front pastedown, and the title page is illustrated with a black and white image of a boy painting a fence. All of the illustrations are of animals; some have been colored. A ms. inscription in ink is on the title page. "2.-" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the title page.

    This collection contains nearly 600 monographs published by the British publishing firm A & C Black from the late 1800s through the 1950s (bulk 1901-1936). Many of the volumes were published as part of the firm's successful "Colour Books" series and contain color plates and pictorial cloth bindings. The titles in the collection cover a variety of subjects including travel in Great Britain and abroad, antiquities, art, history of various civilizations, social life and customs of various cultures, natural history, literary classics and other literature (especially juvenile), gardening, military art and science, recreation, and transportation. Many of the firm's early 20th century series are represented by items in the collection, including the 20 shilling series; 7s 6d series; Artist's sketch book series; the "Peeps" series including Peeps at Many Lands; Beautiful Britain; Black's Popular Series of Colour Books; and Black's Water-Colour series. The collection also includes two non-A & C Black imprints by William Collins Sons and Co. and J.M. Dent.
