One painting book, copyright 1932, entitled The Easy to Paint Book, by Helen Schwarz, published by Whitman Publishing Company, Racine, Wisconsin. This book is comprised of 48 unnumbered pages of colored and black and white illustrations for painting. The front cover features an orange, white and black illustration of three children looking at a painting book. The same image appears on the back cover along with the title "The Painting Book." Printed on the inside of the front cover are "Instructions for Painting Book"; the last of which is "NEVER put your brush in your mouth." Printed at the bottom of the inside front cover: "W684. Copyright 1932 Whitman Publishing Company, Racine, Wisconsin, Printed in U.S.A." Throughout the book, illustrations appear as pairs of colored and uncolored images. Many have been filled in with watercolor.

Landscape Painting Book

One painting book entitled Landscape Painting Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, copyright 1902. The front cover shows a winter landscape. The title page features a different title (Object Painting Book) than that found on the front cover. The inside front cover reads "a few practical directions for young painters," including how to mix paints. The back inside cover depicts a palette of red, green, yellow, blue and purple; matching paint has been applied to each color by the student. The book contains 8 pages of images, half of which are printed in color, the other half in outline. The outlined images were filled in using the complementary color image as a guide. All of the outlined images have been filled in with watercolors. In the upper-right hand corner of the title page, in pencil, is written "1.00".

The Young Artist's Painting and Drawing Book

One drawing/painting book, ca. 1915, entitled The Young Artist's Painting and Drawing Book, by F. I. Wetherbee, published by M. A. Donohue & Co., Chicago. This book is comprised of 44 unnumbered pages of chromolithograph and outline illustrations for painting. The front cover is a chromolithograph of a seated child who is painting at an easel. "M.A. Donohue & Co., Chicago" is printed in the lower left-hand corner. The back cover illustration is of a girl on a low seat reading a book. "Directions for the Little Artist" are printed on the front pastedown, opposite the title page. A few descriptive lines are printed below the title: "Being a collection of the most artistic color schemes ever produced in an instructive painting book, teaching accuracy, harmony, beauty and color with pencil, paint and brush. Complete instructions for the little artist." Most, but not all, of the images appear in pairs, one colored and the other in outline form, for coloring. Some of the illustrations have been colored.

Ideal Paint-Box-Book, with Easy Drawing Lessons for Young Painters

One painting book entitled Ideal Paint-Box-Book, with Easy Drawing Lessons for Young Painters, published by the Ideal Book Builders, Publishers, Chicago, Illinois, ca. 1907. This book-length painting book contains watercolors, a small palette and paintbrush, all of which folds into a box on the inside front cover. Unnumbered pages of both chromolithograph and lithograph images for coloring comprise the rest of the book. Text in the form of rhymes and poetry accompany most images. The front cover is a chromolithograph image of a boy and a girl painting with two such painting books. Within the body of illustrations, there are several containing racial slurs. The last page is a publisher's advertisement for these and similar painting books. Many of the lithograph images have been colored in with the paints provided. "Patented in United States, Nov. 12, 1907" and "Patented in Great Britain, Dec. 10, 1907" are printed at the bottom of the front cover.

Painting Plays for Rainy Days, and Easy Drawing Lessons

One painting book entitled Painting Plays for Rainy Days, And Easy Drawing Lessons, by J. H. Willard, published by Thompson & Thomas, Chicago, 1902. [Note: the imprint information for this record is taken from the title on the title page, which differs slightly from the cover.] The book is approximately 200 unnumbered pages in length. The front cover is a chromolithograph of three kittens playing with a paint box and brushes. The back cover is not illustrated. The illustrations inside the book are a combination of chromolithographs and outline images for painting. Some of the pictures are accompanied by rhymes or instructional text. The images seem to progress throughout the book from simple (drawing straight lines) to increasingly more complex (patterns and designs). These include scenes of children at play, patterns, designs, fruits and vegetables, animals and buildings. Also included are lessons in perspective and proportion. Many of the images have been colored with watercolor .

The inside front cover reads "a few practical directions for coloring;" and these also include directions on how to mix paints. The book contains 12 pages of images, half of which are printed in color, the other half in outline. The latter have all been filled in with colored pencil or crayon using the complementary color image as a guide.
