John Meyer's diary for the year 1863 when the 28th Regiment was part of the Department of the Tennessee and, since July 1863, the Department of Gulf. Long, detailed daily entries cover the military campaigns and operations -- Gorman's expedition up the White River (Jan. 13-19); expedition from Helena, Ark. to Yazoo Pass (Feb. 13 - Apr. 5); operations against Fort Pemberton and Greenwood (Mar. 13 - Apr. 5); expedition to St. Francis River (Apr. 5-11); the battles of Port Gibson (May 1); Bayou Pierre (May 2-3); Fourteen-Mile Creek (May 12 -13); Champion Hill (May 17); Big Black River (May 17); siege of Vicksburg, Miss. (May 18 - July 4); the siege of Jackson (Miss)' duty at Carrollton and Brashear City, La. (Aug. 2 - Oct. 3); Western Louisiana Campaign (Oct. 3 - Nov. 3), and duty at New Iberia and New Orleans, La. The diary also discusses the soldiers' health; war and political news; encounters with Union loyalists and African Americans, etc.

The bulk of the collection consists of Phillips's correspondence with family and friends that covers his ministry in Ohio and California, his Civil War service, and his brief tenure as the president of Colorado Seminary. Phillips's letters and diaries discuss his ministry, religious revivals in Ohio, family affairs, temperance, political and war news, his journey to Colorado and life in Denver. The diaries also include drafts of sermons, orations, and literary compositions. The correspondence that covers the period of Phillips's service in California consists primarily of letters written to him by his friends and family in Ohio. Phillips's Civil War correspondence and diary provide detailed accounts of Phillips's war experience in Tennessee and Georgia, including the Chickamauga and Atlanta campaigns, religious revivals in the Union Army, news from home, religion in the South, and slavery. Also included is a small group of letters and documents of Phillips's son-in-law Cary W. Kauke, including letters from his friend, Frederick (Fritz) Nussbaum of the 107th Regiment of Ohio Infantry (1862-1863). The collection also contains some correspondence of Addison S. McClure, concerning supplying beef to the United States Army, and post-war letters discussing Ohio and national Republican politics.

In his diary, Homer A. Parmelee writes of his experiences as a Union recruit during the American Civil War. On October 7, 1862, he writes that he has been sworn into Union service. In the next entries, he describes his experiences training in New York, then writes of his traveling by boat to the Mississippi River, where he was stationed at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, taking part in drills and standing watch. He describes his involvement during the siege of Port Hudson, where he was wounded in the arm on May 27, 1863. He was transported to a Baton Rouge hospital, where he writes of his discovery and receiving daily news of the ongoing conflict. He writes of his return to duty several weeks later, and he was pleased to receive his discharge in July 1863. He describes his journey home, where he was part of a group of returning soldiers welcomed by a large crowd. The final entries document Parmelee's ensuing activities, mostly concerned with his doing odd jobs such as building chimneys and plastering, and records of his pay. Also included is a hand-drawn map of an unspecified battle site, and what appears to be a table of locations visited and distances traveled.

Personal and professional papers of Thomas William Sweeny, including his personal and official correspondence, military records, and diaries, and the correspondence of William Montgomery Sweeny. Also included photographs, some pencil and ink drawings, and ephemera. Personal correspondence of Thomas William Sweeny, chiefly his letters to the family and friends written from 1846 to 1892. Military correspondence and documents - letters, orders, communications, reports, ordnance receipts, commissions, recruiting records, etc. -- accumulated by Sweeny during his service in the Mexican War, the tours in California and Nebraska Territory, and the Civil War, chiefly those received by him or his staff. There are some retained copies of outgoing communications and reports, including official reports on the battles of Shiloh and Corinth, and the march on the Holly Springs, some with by hand-drawn maps. Also included are the speech that Sweeny delivered on the first anniversary of the Battle of Shiloh, and his farewell address to the troops (July 1864). A large part of Sweeny's correspondence that he kept after his retirement from the army consists of letters from veterans and veteran organizations, including the associations of the veterans of the Mexican War, the 52nd Illinois Infantry, Army of the Tennessee, officers of the Irish Brigade, Associated Pioneers of the Territorial Days of California, Military Service Institution, the Grand Army of the Republic, Hibernian Benevolent Society, and others. Also included is the diary that Thomas William Sweeny kept during his service at Fort Yuma in 1851-1853. Another diary, titled "Life in the American Desert" (1851, June-July) consists of clippings of the articles published in installments by the New York Atlas in 1856-1857, with author's annotations. Correspondence and papers of William Montgomery Sweeny, chiefly letters addressed to him and related to his biographical and genealogical studies, including some genealogical data.
