One book entitled Chinese Shadow Plays, by Pauline Benton, "Developed as a China Study Unit by the Red Gate Players", published by Industrial Arts Cooperative Service, New York, ca. 1935. This instructional booklet is 19 numbered, typescript pages in length; the last two pages are illustrations of Chinese figures in traditional costume. The (faded green) front cover bears the name of the publisher next to the right of its logo. The back cover, and the insides of the covers, are blank. The book provides an historical background and how-to instructions for creating Chinese shadow plays, which utilize transparent, animated parchment figures behind a brightly lighted screen. Included is a list of materials needed, and sections on production, staging, scenery, costumes and music. A bibliography is also included. Laid into the book are three ephemeral pieces about the Red Gate Players. "Stage Craft, Chinese Shadow Plays" is written in ms. at the top of the front cover. "Mabel Spofford" is written in ms. in the center of the front cover.

Short essays on Chinese foods abroad, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, bean curd (an invaluable food), See You (soy bean sauce), Chinese rice, preserving, and beverages are interspersed with thirty recipes. There is also a recipe for dim sums; the uniquely Melbourne version of a Cantonese siu mai dumpling. Geechoun was the son of Chinese market-gardeners in the Victorian city of Bendigo, who went on to become an importer, parliamentarian, and owner of the Kowlon restaurant in South Yarra.

"In this paper the author repeated his conviction that the so-called Victoria Nyanza is not a lake, but a lake region. He had found new matter in support of this opinion in the able paper upon Routes in East Africa, published by the Rev. Thomas Wakefield, of Mombasa, in the last volume of the 'Journal' of the Society. As these routes were wholly taken from native authority, the President, Sir Henry Rawlinson, had remarked that the "Pundit system" might be found as useful in Africa as it has proved to be in high Asia. Mr. Wakefield's notes had been ably and judiciously commented upon by Mr. Keith Johnston, and Captain Burton's object was to add emphasis to that geographer's remarks, and to the supplement them with the experiences of a practical traveller"--from abstract.
