  One manufacturer's advertisement/drawing book entitled Slate Drawings for the Young Folks, published by Belding Bros. & Co., Boston, Massachusetts, ca. 1891. This 16-page booklet is a promotional piece for Belding Bros. & Co.'s silk products as well as an instructional aid. Each page contains several white-on-black illustrations, designed to represent chalk drawings on a drawing slate. Above and below each illustrated page are advertising and promotional statements about Belding Brothers & Co.'s silk thread. The front cover is designed to look like a drawing slate, with the text written on the slate. The insides of the front and back covers are advertisements, as is the back cover. "Lillian Wright, Jan. 4, 1891, Ayer, Mass." is written in ms., in pencil, at the top of the inside front cover.

  "Satin Gloss" Drawing Book, for Little Folks

  One manufacturer's advertisement/drawing book entitled "Satin Gloss" Drawing Book, for Little Folks, published by David S. Brown & Co., New York, ca. 1885. This 8-page booklet is a promotional piece for Satin Gloss soap and is comprised of 8 different lithograph advertising images, each with a sheet of tracing paper bound in. The covers are chromolithographs; the front cover features a little girl holding two rabbits; the back cover pictures two little girls, one of whom is whispering in the ear of the other. Each of the images for tracing are captioned with promotional phrases; an image of a horse-drawn cart is captioned "This is one of the trucks that delivers Satin Gloss Soap to your grocer." The insides of the front and back covers contain advertising text. Each of the images has been copied onto tracing paper.

  Easy Drawing Lessons for Blackboard or Slate

  One set of drawing cards entitled Easy Drawing Lessons for Blackboard or Slate, by E. Croasdale, printed by J.M. Stoddart & Co., Philadelphia, 1879. The label identifies E. Croasdale as the "Principal, Philadelphia School of Design for Women." The set is comprised of 36 cards, each containing white images against a black background. Intended for copying, the lessons begin with simple lines and progress to more complex forms. Each card is numbered in the upper left-hand corner and contains two images. For example, card 36 shows a young man holding a baseball bat on the left-hand side and on the right-hand side a cricket bat, ball and wickets. Printed on one side of the wrapper is: "Edwards & Docker, Box Makers, 418 Market St., Philadelphia." Original price for the cards, 25 cents.

  Bartholomew's Primary School Drawing Cards, No. 1

  One set of drawing cards entitled Bartholomew's Primary School Drawing Cards, No. 1, by W. N. Bartholomew, published by Woolworth, Ainsworth & Co., New York and Chicago, 1874. This set is comprised of 10 double-sided lithograph cards, principally containing line drawing lessons on each side, totaling 20 lessons. The exercises in this series are listed on the envelope wrapper, below the title: "SET No. 1 - Simple exercises in placing points, drawing lines, plane figures, familiar objects and ornamental forms; also lessons in Printing and Writing." Sets 2 and 3 are also described. Each lesson is printed on a black background, with the image or letter to be copied in white. These drawing cards were designed to be used in conjunction with a drawing slate; the card would be placed in the card holder at one end of the slate, and the image copied onto the slate. The penmanship lessons on Card 10 are labeled "Payson, Dunton & Scribner's Penmanship." On the back side of the envelope is a publisher's advertisement for "Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing" books. The dimensions provided are for the envelope.

  Philips' Drawing Copy Book, Design & Drawn by a Practical Teacher, No. 3

  Visual Materials

  One drawing book entitled Philips' Drawing Copy Book, Designed & Drawn by a Practical Teacher, No. 3, published by George Philip & Son, London, ca. 1870. This book is comprised of 8 lithographed, unnumbered plates. Each plate is comprised of an image (buildings, such as houses and churches) and space for copying. There is no text. The title on the front cover is superimposed on a lithograph view of a man who is drawing at the edge of a lake, with a mountainous background. Most of the interior plates are signed by different artists. These include: Greet; Coalport; Birmingham; Troubridge; Bridnorth[?]; Douglas; the last image is unsigned. At the bottom of the front cover a blue paper label is mounted. It reads: "Boston School Supply Co. 15 Bromfield St., Boston, Mass. John A Boyle, Manager." The back cover bears a publisher's advertisement for "Philips' Drawing Copy Books, series of easy landscapes."
