Included is material on national politics during the same period. Correspondents include John Bidwell, Jacob P. Leese, William S. Johnston, Aaron Augustus Sargent, and James McCord Stilson.

Collection of California pictorial letter sheets, chiefly lithographic, depicting life in California during the Gold Rush. Illustrations include views and maps of San Francisco, Sacramento, towns in the mining regions, and current news events (fires, shipwrecks, earthquakes, hangings, etc.). Most have descriptive text, a few have text only. California artists, lithographers, publishers and engravers represented include: T. Armstrong, G.H. Baker, T.C. Boyd, H. Eastman, G.H. Goddard, C. Nahl, A. Rosenfield, Charles F. Robbins, Wm. B. Monmonier, J.W. Douglass, Cooke & Lecount, Edwin Glover, Britton & Rey, Pullard and Britton, Justh & Quirot.
