Image of a colorful map of the United States. The decorative title reads, “Our Country. Published by Ensign, Bridgman and Fanning. 156 Williams Street, New York.” To the left of the title is an image of a sailor waving an American flag, as well as two engraved vignettes labeled, “Agriculture,” and “Arts.” To the right of the title is an image of a crowd of people celebrating the Constitution and Laws, as well as two engraved vignettes labeled, “Manufacturers,” and “Commerce.” The images include people in the act of farming and working in factories, as well as images of ships at sea and different forms of art. The map is framed on the left-and-right sides with decorative borders containing names of political figures on ribbons, starting on the top-left with Washington and ending on the bottom right with D. Webster. The central image of the print is a large map of the U.S. with an inset map of Mexico on the left lower corner, and an inset vignette towards the right corner of an American Eagle and shield providing a population table for the states. Relief on the map is shown by hachures, and states are represented with varying colors of pink, green, blue, and yellow. The top border with Canada and the lower border with Mexico is outlined in red. The map shows railroads, rivers, capitals, cities and Indian lands. Towards the bottom of the print are engraved views showing images of American history. As described in the key titled “Description of the Engravings Below,” the images range from Columbus’s discovery of America in 1492, ending with “Fulton’s First Steamboat shown to an Indian,” in the 19th century.
