Clippings about Closing (2 of 3)

    Manuscripts

Approx. 85 items: newspaper clippings, mostly from small papers, many of them weeklies, commenting on "newspaper deaths" in general and in particular on the closing of the Los Angeles Examiner (which merged with the Herald) and the Los Angeles Mirror (which merged with The Times). Folder contains some transcripts from broadcast news programs related to the newspaper closings. Some papers put forward the opinion that Americans lost some of their "freedom of choice" when a small paper folded or was subsumed by a larger one. (Anaheim Gazette) Split into three folders.

Clippings about Closing (1 of 3)

    Manuscripts

Approx. 90 items: newspaper clippings, mostly from small papers, many of them weeklies, commenting on "newspaper deaths" in general and in particular on the closing of the Los Angeles Examiner (which merged with the Herald) and the Los Angeles Mirror (which merged with The Times). Among the publications collected here are California Bowling News (Glendale), Citizen News (Hollywood), Mackay Miner (Mackay, ID), Crestline Courier, Redondo Beach Reflex, and even the Wall St. Journal. Some criticized LAT who they felt was gobbling up the smaller competition. Others, like the Highland Park News-Herald, said that this meant "the future belongs to the suburbs," which was, Highland Park being a suburb of L.A., a self-serving message. Split into three folders.
