Kashnor notes, "Shows California as an island, and the imaginary Strait of Anian. This is one of the decorative type, richly colored." Shirley notes this map originates with that of Arnold Colom, c.1655, which supplied the surround scenes. This map was modified by de Wit and used by Doncker in his Zee Atlas (does NOT appear in the Doncker atlas owned by the Huntington, RB 70778). Kashnor dates as 1665, Shirley as 1676. Allegorical figures of Fire, Air, Water and Land, Sun and Moon. A striking map. Prime meridian: Tenerife. Relief: pictorial. Projection: Dual Hemisphere. Printing Process: Copper engraving. Kashnor notes, "On the North-West coast it shows the supposed Strait of Anain. California is represented as an island, and it locates Capes Mendocino on Forturas, and New Albion." McLaughlin dates as 1670 and places in Amsterdam, and appeared in information. RLIN record dates as 1680? Burden suggests a date of ca. 1658. See also 105:285 for another copy. Cartouche with Indians. Dedication to Cornelis Witsen, father of the more famous Nicolaas Witsen. Dedication surrounded by angels. MS note: 60 (upper left). Prime meridian: Tenerife.
