Sothern was known for playing tragic and romantic roles and often performed in Shakespeare plays. The photograph shows Sothern in profile, in character as Shakespeare's Juliet, one of her more famous roles. A signed inscription is addressed to Caroline (Rofes?), and dated Boston, 1919.
