Los Angeles-based artist Mustafa Ali Clayton takes us inside his creative process while making a new sculpture for exhibition at The Huntington. Filmed in his studio and in our galleries, Clayton reflects on the influence of Sargent Claude Johnson, the continuity he feels with earlier artists, and the importance of representing Black subjects in museum spaces. Clayton’s sculpture is now on view in the Scott Galleries as part of a major reinstallation connected to The Huntington’s THIS LAND IS… initiative.
