Los Angeles-based artist Mustafa Ali Clayton takes us inside his creative process while making a new sculpture for an upcoming exhibition at The Huntington. Filmed in his studio and in our galleries, Clayton reflects on the influence of Sargent Claude Johnson, the continuity he feels with earlier artists, and the importance of representing Black subjects in museum spaces. See Clayton’s work on view starting Dec. 7, 2025, as part of a major reinstallation in the Scott Galleries connected to The Huntington’s THIS LAND IS… initiative.
