Illustration 2 to Milton's "Paradise Lost": Satan, Sin, and Death: Satan Comes to the Gates of Hell

In one of the most frequently illustrated passages in the poem, Satan (left) tries to leave hell but is confronted by his offspring, Death, whose crown indicates his rule over the mortal world but whose transparent body suggests his spiritual insubstantiality. Sin, the mother of Death, tries to separate the combatants. Her serpents coil on the ground and her hell-hounds bark below her loins. The key to hell's gates dangles right of Death's right calf.
