Katerina Ivanovna
Image not available
This drawing was given to the Huntington by Paul S. Kearns, a student of Mr. Robinson, who acquired the drawing from the artist for $18 in May or June 1947. The drawing depicts a man with a sword on the right (Dmitri Karamazov) bowing to a woman (Katerina Ivanovna), who stands in a doorway holding a handkerchief to her mouth with one hand and either accepting or giving a piece of paper (probably the money) with the other hand. The work is a study for an illustration Robinson made for a 1933 University of Chicago edition of Dostoyevsky's 'The Brothers Karamazov,' Book III, 'The Confession of an ardent heart -- in verse'
