Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield
1 of 3
This is one of the nine busts that Richard Grenville (1675–1749) commissioned of various sculptors around 1740 to decorate the Temple of Friendship at his country house of Stowe in Buckinghamshire. The structure was badly damaged by fire in 1840 and the busts were sold in 1848. Stanhope wears a medal depicting St. George, England's patron saint, that represents the knighthood he received in 1730.
