As the Los Angeles Times art critic and printmaker Arthur Millier remarked, Wanda Gág drew lithographs "with that extra personal twist of feeling which can make a mere bowl of fruit or a simple forge more interesting than some exciting bit of human drama." Here she conveyed the sense of a living presence in this still life of objects from her backyard. The axe and shovel seem to have been left momentarily, and the irregular sides of the pails have an anthropomorphic quality.
After studying at the Art Students League, Gág created illustrations for The Masses and showed her work at the Weyhe Gallery. She is probably best known for writing and illustrating the children's book Millions of Cats (1928).
