Description
Queen Anne carved and turned maple side chair; with carved and pierced crest rail, molded back, slip seat with shaped seat rail, bulbous front stretcher and Spanish feet. Attributed to John Gaines, Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Gaines’s distinctive chair design featured a crest with triple-swept cove molding ending in volutes at each end; carved, oversized Spanish feet; and a vase-shaped splat (the vertical central element of a chair back).
