Seascape

1 of 3

A painter of exactingly detailed ship portraits and dramatic sea battles, Thomas Buttersworth lived in England. However, his paintings, which often portray American vessels, were immensely popular in this country and often reproduced as prints.

In this seascape several war ships circulate in the rough water as a dinghy negotiates the choppy waves.
