Still Life with Telephone

Luigi Lucioni juxtaposed objects traditionally associated with artists' still lifes-fruit, a bottle, and drapery-with items associated with modern America: a can of Campbell's soup and a telephone. A glimpse of Washington Square Park in New York City can be seen through the open window.

Lucioni immigrated to New York from Italy as a child. At age 31, he became the youngest artist to have a painting-his still life Dahlias and Apples-purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
