Rosewater ewer and basin

Until the early 17th century, when the use of forks became widespread, English diners ate mostly with their fingers. After or between courses of a meal, servants approached guests in order of priority and poured scented water over their hands before presenting them with a towel. Elaborate, richly decorated ewers and basins made a ceremonial event out of the hygienic necessity of washing hands.
