The Guzman Palace and Serenos, León

1 of 2

Bone captures the sixteenth-century Guzman Palace, in northern Spain, from an oblique angle, emphasizing its monumentality. Initially trained as an architect, Bone switched to studying art, but his knowledge of buildings and their construction informs a large portion of his work. Buildings were indeed frequent subjects of his watercolors and graphite drawings. In this example, the building is set in a rich, velvety darkness populated with cloaked figures walking beneath a black sky dotted with stars (2022).
