- Description
- The attribution of these drawings to Robert Blake is lent some credence by the similarities between a few of the profiles in the sketchbook and several heads he drew on the verso of one of his drawings in the British Museum (Butlin 1981, No. R 11). Yet it is unlikely that the sketchbook would be associated with either Blake if it were not for the inscriptions. There is no independent evidence supporting the claim that the sketchbook was once in Stothard's collection. It must be admitted, however, that there are few extant draftsman, and very few extant works by William Blake datable prior to 1779-80. Butlin 1981, 617, accepts the sketchbook as Robert Blake's but also notes David Bindman's doubts about the involvement of either arttist, particularly William Blake's.
