This portrait was painted on the occasion of Rose Gardiner’s marriage to Jeremiah Milles, whose portrait also hangs in this gallery. Romney adopts elements of classical art for this portrait, from the subject's pose—in which she rests her elbow on a pillar—to the loose arrangement of her hair and restrained positioning of her hands.
