Both Dearle's and Morris's later wallpapers show the influence of the mirrored patterns and motifs typical of historic woven textiles of the fourteenth through sixteenth centuries. Here, Dearle experiments in this design with a palette of pastel colors, perhaps in response to changing fashions in late Victorian interior decoration, as lighter chintzes found favor over heavy velvets. Dearle uses dots, or stippling, in the lower left corner to add movement and depth to the pattern.
