Design for Carpet
1 of 2
This carpet design was made for George McCulloch (1852-1920), one of Morris & Company's most significant Australian clients. McCulloch ordered a set of the firm's Holy Grail tapestries in 1898 along with a special Hammersmith carpet for the same room. Inscriptions in the upper right corner of Dearle's design describe the client's preference for brighter colors than in earlier Morris examples, which generally had a deep indigo blue center with a contrasting red border.
