Description
This painting portrays a view of the wharf and the Doge's Palace, which was both the official residence of the Doge and the seat of government in Venice, Italy. At the far left, marking the opening of the Grand Canal, is the church of Santa Maria della Salute.

This striking view of Venice, along with its companion Venice, St. Mark's (#78.20.27A), shows Canaletto's ability to capture the intricacies of Venetian architecture. His precise handling and clear delineations of Venetian topography record some of the most famous landmarks of this renowned city: the distinctive pink and white palace of the Doges (Venice's elected rulers), the twin columns framing the entrance to the piazza, and the domed church of Santa Maria della Salute at the entrance to the Grand Canal.
