This is a late work by Harpignies, one of the leaders of the Barbizon school, best known for painting the countryside of central France. This landscape places the viewer in the forest, where an opening in the trees frames a vista of water and clouds. The outdoor subject matter, loose brushwork, and palette of grays and greens show the continuity of Barbizon themes and style in French art well after Impressionism made its impact in the mid-1870s.
