Imperfect sketch of a map from 1-1/2° north, to 10--1/2° south latitude, and from 29 to 44 degrees east longitude, by the missionaries of the Church Missiony. Society in eastern Africa. Rabbai Mpia, J. Rebman, 1850. 1 sheet. [see p.]."Numerous handwritten notes by Rebmann on this map regarding various tribes. Significant note on western border: "Hereabout the natives place a very large Lake or River, from the eastern shore of which they cannot see the western. It is said to be navogated. A flow and ebb are ascried to it." This would be Lake Victoria. Johannes Rebmann was one of the first missionaries in East Africa, and together with Johann Ludwig Krapf was the first European to see Mt. Kilimanjaro. Rabbai Mpia, where the map was published, was a missionary station just north of Mombasa along the coast. Stamp: Kensington Public Libraries. Prime meridian: GM. Relief: hachures.
