    Manuscripts

    The collection has several strong subject points for the purpose of research including journalism and the writing process and the history of Los Angeles. There are many letters written during World War II that discuss life in America as well as abroad, especially Iwo Jima. The bulk of the collection includes correspondence to Smith from his readers, many of whom were persons of note, and Smith's own subject files of topics often discussed in his columns. The manuscripts include a number of Smith's notebooks as well as drafts of essays and monographs. The ephemera includes appearances of Smith's columns, photographs of Smith's work and family, and printed materials related to Smith's work and family life.

    Photographic postcards, color postcards, and a few photographs

    A binder of approximately 400 images of the Philippines, chiefly black-and-white photographic postcards, 3.25 x 5.5 inches, with titles imprinted by the publisher. There are also color photomechanical postcards, and a few loose photographs. Some postcards have writing and stamps and have been mailed to the U.S. and elsewhere. Of note is one oversized panoramic format, hand-colored photo postcard of Baguio. These postcards were produced in large quantities by photography studios and publishers often based in the Philippines and circulated internationally.

    Contains nine color photographs, eight by George Waters and one by an unidentified photographer, all dated approximately 1988. Four photographs were used in the exhibition, "Personal Edens": depictions of the Davis garden, red granite terrace and woodland walk (Items 1 and 2, 1988); and of the Doerr garden, view of lower garden and view to summer house (Items 3 and 4, 1988). Also includes one photograph, possibly of the Doerr garden, that was marked "not being used" (Item 5); three photographs of the Stewart estate, Il Brolino (Items 6-8); and one photograph of the Warner estate (Item 9). Items 5-8 are by George Waters; it is possible that Items 6-9 were exhibited.

    Large color postcards, loose photographs, and ephemera

    Visual Materials

    Approximately 200 loose photographs, 100 color postcards, and some ephemera. The photographs are small, black and white snapshots of unidentified people and scenes in the Philippines. Images are grouped together as they were received, in individual sets of prints acquired from various sources. Many have handwriting on the back. The large photographic color postcards were made approximately 1967 to 1997, and feature dancers, festivals, tourist attractions and others. Almost all published by the National Book Store, Manila. Ephemera consists of Philippines postage stamps; paper money printed with "The Japanese Government"; and a club card and photograph for the Mariner's Club, Manila, 1930s.
