    Album's spine is deteriorating. Many of the woodcuts are printed by the American Valentine Co. and were created during the American Civil War. Pages of the back of the album are in German and are unrelated to valentines.

    Black bound album embossed with designs. Album includes valentines, engravings, drawings, and colored illustrations ranging in dates. Many of the drawings are signed "L. Young" and "S. Young." Includes folder of loose materials from scrapbook.

    Series I. Valentine's Day

    Visual Materials

    The Valentine's Day series contains greeting cards, booklets, verse writers, periodicals, pictorials, scrapbooks, albums, sheet music and other ephemera relating to the holiday. This series is the largest in the collection and includes paper lace valentines, printed valentines, handmade valentines, comic valentines, and dimensional and mechanical cards. Many valentine stationers, makers, and distributors such as McLoughlin Bros., Raphael Tuck & Sons, and T.W. Strong also published valentine letter writers, greeting card booklets, price lists, and promotional materials found throughout the series.

    Subseries G. Scrapbooks and albums

    Visual Materials

    This subseries consists of scrapbooks, sample books, and albums relating to Valentine's Day. The albums vary from containing samples of paper lace valentines, cobweb valentines, comic valentines, or albums with scrap materials. Also included are personalized albums owned by individuals who collected valentines.
