A hand-colored lithograph view print depicting the capture of the Chinese Summer Palace near Peking, China. The image includes Chinese soldiers in varying military attire and queue braids while armed with swords, bows and arrows, dragon shields, and talismanic demon portraits. The French military is depicted in the center of the print dressed in blue uniforms with epaulettes, bayonets, and rifles on horseback while waving a flag with a French imperial eagle finial and flag. The right of the image depicts crowds of men in uniform fighting, and one of the men is illustrated in a red coat, likely referring to the British army. Background and foreground illustrate the Chinese soldiers as falling in defeat. The title is printed in French and English below the image. Signed by printer, "Lith: H Jannin, Paris" in the lower right corner. Signed by the publisher, "Paris chez Codoni, rue Grenier St. Lazare, 20," in the lower left corner. Signed by artist "Albert" in stone in the image's lower right corner.

Welbeck. Paragon un Barbe

A hand-colored engraving depicting a view of Welbeck Estate in Nottinghamshire, the private home of William Cavendish, the Duke of Newcastle, from 1617 to 1676. The central image in the foreground depicts an African man holding the reins of a brown Barbary horse in front of the main façade and entryway of Welbeck Abbey. The background imagery includes branches, stones, trees, and flying birds. Text on top of the print reads, "Welbeck." Text on the bottom of the print reads, "Paragon un Barbe." To the right of the image, decorative text in French reads, "La Maison de Welbeck appartenant a Monseigneur le Marquis de Newcastle, le quel est dans la Province de Nottingham." Signed on lower right corner, by artist, "Abr. A Diepenbeke delineavit," and by engraver, "Petr. van Lisebelten sculpsit." Print was originally published as the sixth plate of Cavendish's "A new method, and extraordinary invention, to dress horses..." (either 1658 print or later editions), and is the source of the approximate date.

Air mail across the Pacific : San Francisco to Hong Kong

A black-and-white print published by the San Francisco Post Office advertising its trans-Pacific airmail service. The title of the print is in English, with Chinese text on the lower half describing how airmail was shipped from San Francisco to Honolulu, Guam, Manila, Macao, and Hong Kong. Text in Chinese also lists the postage rates and total duration of the flights varying by destination. The center of the print features Clyde H. Sunderland's aerial photograph of Pan American Airway's "China Clipper" flying over San Francisco, California. The top and bottom of the print include borders decorated with monoplane motifs. The printed signature at the lower center reads, "San Francisco P.O. 9-30-37-500."
