Description: A single slide boxwood rule created by Dring & Fage using Edward Alexander Phillips (E.A.P.) Burt's 1887 patented measurements for calculating gauges and cubic feet of trees. The rule measures 24 inches along one edge, but with the addition of two bronze end caps, the item is approximately 25.5 inches in width and 2.8 inches in height. The rule is double-sided, engraved, and contains both Hoppus and Customs measuring systems. The other edge of the rule reads, "Burt's Rapid Board Measure Calculator. For All American Colonial Foreign Lumber Mahogany Etc. Patent No. 4359." The item is signed and trademarked by the manufacturer on one side of the rule. The signature reads, "Dring & Fage Maker. 56 Stamford St., London." The approximate date of the item is based on the manufacturer's address history.

Ching How Menu

A menu for James Wong Howe's and Sanora Babb's Ching How restaurant in Los Angeles, California. The cover is printed with green and black border illustrations of stylistic Chinese motifs, including birds, dragons, and women in dress. Center of cover reads "Ching How Menu" and the illustration is signed by an unknown artist, "Sally" towards the lower right. Interior pages include variations of food entrees, appetizers, soups, and other dishes with their prices. The menu is bilingual, with the original dish names listed in Chinese and English descriptions below, for example, "Git Lic Gai...Fried breaded boneless chicken with sweet and sour sauce." Some items are crossed out in black pen, noting name changes or when the restaurant was out of a specific item. The menu promotes "Chinese food in the Chinese manner," while having "the chef of a thousand dishes," and an introduction to "the best in Chinese food." The approximate date of the item is based on text in the lower center of the menu, which mentions pricing being high in April 1943.

Haight is love : summer is a love in-here

A color offset lithograph announcing the Summer of Love movement held in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district. In psychedelic font, the text reads, "Haight is love: summer is a love-in here." Most of the text is in a bold green color set against a red-and-orange background. The word "love" is overlaid in black-and-white with details from Jost Amman's woodcut, "Quibus eo sane, Ordine Doctrina..." (1572). The word "is" in the title is centered by mirroring purple-and-green decorative images of a nude man and woman in an embrace. The bottom left of the print includes the date of copyright and reads, "UFO Posters. 1608 Haight Street. San Francisco, Calif." Bottom right includes an image of the Lithographers and Photoengravers International Union (LPIU) emblem and text that reads "Printed by Double-H Press." Signed by the artist, John Dolley [Dulley?] on the right of the image.

Questions of measuring, calculation and a weather rope

Manuscripts

The volume is a compendium on measuring and calculation, with a final section on a "weather rope;" this is a type of hygrometer, whose use is apparently not described in Britain in other sources, which was first described by Santorio in 1612. The volume is bound with thread in paper covers; with some damage and staining to covers. Facing title page is written: "Thomas Turner / huius libri possesor / est : Anno Domini 1701."
