    Lithographs of Maximilian I and Charlotte

    Manuscripts

    This collection contains 136 letters, broadsides, circulars, blank government forms, and lithographs describing the political and military activities of the Mexican state Nuevo León from 1853 to1878. Some of the people represented throughout the collection include Santiago Vidaurri, Ignacio Comonfort, Pedro de Ampudia, Jesús María Aguilar, Juan de Dios Villalon, and Julián Quiroga. The manuscripts and broadsides from the 1850s detail governmental policies and the administration of Nuevo León as well as military issues such as condemning deserters. Correspondence, circulars, and proclamations during the 1860s include information about the intensity of the revolution, economic hardships, political elections, changing laws, taxes, commerce, changing political leadership, and military routes. There are two lithographs, the first depicts Maximilian I and his wife Charlotte of Belgium, and the second is titled Last Moments of Maximilian, Emperor of Mexico.

    Costumes Modes

    An album containing 318 lithographed fashion plates with hand-colored details dating from 1825 to 1830. The album is assembled with plates from three Parisian fashion magazines: Le Conseiller des Grace, Modes de Paris, and Costumes de Paris. The plates are individually titled and contain descriptions in French about the illustrated garments, textiles, and accessories. Images are primarily of women's fashion, but a few plates depict clothing for men and children. Some of the prints are signed by lithographer J.T. Tallois, reading "Lith. de J.T. Tallois. Rue du Curé, près la Chapelle." Album cover includes the title, dates, and a signature in ink, possibly reading "F. Dujardin."

    Vue de San Francisco en 1860 : View of San Francisco in 1860

    A color-tinted lithograph with hand-colored details depicting a bird's-eye-view of San Francisco's Chinatown during its early development. The image was originally created by artist Louis LeBreton, printed by lithographer Francois Gosselin, and published by Henry Payot. The image depicts Chinese townspeople on the hilly outskirts of the town, shown wearing conical hats, loose clothing, and some smoking pipes. Other townspeople are depicted in traditional Victorian attire, shown walking down a central road leading to San Francisco Bay and Yerba Buena Island. Scenery includes sailboats, clouds, palm trees, rocky hills, and building structures. The lower left corner of the image includes a signature that reads "LeBreton." On the left side of the print, text below the image reads "Published by Henry Payot, 184 Washington Street," and below the right of the image, text reads "Paris, Gosselin, Editeur, Imp. 71, r. St. Jacques." The title is printed in both English and French.

    Midnight race on the Mississippi

    A lithograph with hand-colored details depicting two paddlewheel steamboats, the Danna and the Fulton, racing at full steam under moonlight on the Mississippi River. The left of the image includes a stand of trees with spectators and men building structures. The printer's signature below the center of the image reads, "Publ. & print. by Th. Kelly, 17 Barclay St. N.Y." Title is printed in the lower center.

    Jean Pierre Vibert letter to "Monsieur Lauret,"

    Manuscripts

    The letter is written by Jean Pierre Vibert to a "Monsieur Lauret" regarding an order of roses purchased by Lauret. In addition to a detailed invoice of thirteen roses, Vibert exchanges pleasantries with Lauret about visits that his customer has made to Chenevieres, ending with a discussion of the imminent closure of his business and the deep discounts that he can therefore offer on his 1833 catalogue of rose specimens. Letter is in French; written in Paris. With typed English translation.
