    This collection contains approximately 700 World War I propaganda posters and related ephemera dating from approximately 1914 to 1919. The posters were created primarily for government and military agencies, as well as private charities such as the American Committee for Relief in the Near East. While the majority of the collection is American, it also includes British and French posters, and a few Austro-Hungarian/German, Canadian, Belgian, Dutch, Italian, Polish, and Russian items. The images and text of the posters reflect various messages chiefly related to military recruitment and enlistment, food and fuel conservation, aid for soldiers and humanitarian causes, war work, and savings and bond programs, including many that promote the Victory Liberty Loan and War Savings Stamp campaigns in the United States. The United States Committee on Public Information, U.S. Department of the Treasury, United States Food Administration, and the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation produced many of the posters. More than 200 different artists are represented in the collection including James Montgomery Flagg, Charles Dana Gibson, and Edward Penfield in the United States; Francisque Poulbot in France; and Alfred Roller in Austria-Hungary. The collection includes more than 100 posters donated by Charles L. Heartwell (1869-1941), a banker and civic leader in Long Beach, California, who served in the United States Food Administration during World War I. These posters were acquired by Heartwell in his official capacity as a Food Administrator for Los Angeles County and occasionally reference regional recruiting stations in Long Beach. There are similar regionally focused posters for Connecticut and New York City in the collection.

    The five series are: Library Records; Personal Papers given to the Library; Francis Bacon Foundation Records; the Walter and Louise Arensberg Papers; and the Art and Artifacts Collection. The Library records include administration and collection records, gifts and acquisitions, exhibit records, and a large portion of correspondence. The correspondence, almost entirely written by library director Elizabeth Wrigley, is with students, other organizations, scholars, and, notably, interested Baconians (supporters of the theory that Francis Bacon was the true author of the plays attributed to Shakespeare). There are also records of gifts to the library, including books, ephemera and papers of Baconians and other scholars studying the Shakespeare authorship question. These papers comprise the Personal Papers series, and are organized by owner name: Isabelle Kittson Brown, Eugene Dernay, George Drury, Johan Franco, R. W. (Reginald Walter) Gibson, Olive Woodward Hoss, Karl [Richards] Wallace, and A. Allen Woodruff. The Francis Bacon Foundation papers contain articles of incorporation, financial and legal documents, and some correspondence of the board members. There are also clippings and photostats on Shakespeare, Bacon and Elizabethan history that were collected for research purposes. This represents only a portion of the Foundation records; the remainder are in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The personal and family papers of Walter and Louise Arensberg include Walter Arensberg's cryptographic research files, charts and notes; personal papers; drafts of his poems and books; correspondence with Baconians; photographs; and letters of Arensberg and [Louise] Stevens family members. The letters between Walter and his brother Charles F. C. Arensberg are particularly personal and informative. This portion of the Arensbergs' personal papers does not include their correspondence with artists or their art-collecting activities. Those papers (the Arensberg Archives) were given by the Francis Bacon Foundation to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which also holds the Arensberg Art Collection of Modern and pre-Columbian art. The last series of the archive is a group of art objects and historical artifacts that belonged to the Foundation and library. Some were collected by the Arensbergs, and some were acquired by the library after their deaths. They are listed with their original descriptions kept by the Foundation.     Manuscripts

    The collection contains manuscripts by Henry Ellsworth Wood, letters written by various authors, photographs, negatives, ephemera, an assay book, and photograph albums and scrapbooks. The collection spans several generations of the Wood family, focusing on the personal life and business activities of Henry Ellsworth Wood. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence, including some 300 pieces from Henry Ellsworth Wood to his wife, Belle Matteson McGinnis Wood. These letters, composed over the fifty year period of their marriage, cover a wide range of aspects of their lives, including their immediate and extended family, their day-to-day activities, trips to visit family and friends, financial hardships, mining affairs in Colorado and Canada, and assorted business activities. Four generations of the Wood family are represented in the correspondence, including 69 letters composed between 1853 and 1856 by William Cowper Wood, his parents and siblings. The collection includes various drafts of Henry Ellsworth Wood's reminiscences of his childhood and early days in Leadville, the most comprehensive manuscript of this type being "I Remember." Also of note is the manuscript "Colorado in 1868," reproduced with commentary by Henry Ellsworth Wood from a notebook kept by his father, William Cowper Wood, during the 1868 John Wesley Powell expedition. The collection contains one assay book kept by Maurice Hayes between the years 1873 and 1878. Maurice Hayes arrived at Leadville no later than 1873, serving as one of the first assayers in the area and many early Leadville notables are entered in this record book. There are also several scrapbooks and photograph albums, approximately 1868 to approximately 1921.

    The bulk of the collection centers on Scherer's work with the Council of National Defense during the First World War. There are two and half boxes of documents which had been previously collected in two large volumes. The original arrangement (by date) has been retained for both collections (labeled "Bulletins" and "General Letters," respectively) in cataloged form. The "General Letters" collection is the most extensive; it comprises the entirety of Box 2 and the first half of Box 3. In some cases - due to the similarity of their subject material - two or more consecutive listings in the index have been cataloged together in one folder. There are two smaller collections labeled "Noteworthy Activities Undertaken by State Councils" and "I.C.A. Circulars." These two smaller document collections have their own folders in Box 3. All four contain an index - those for the two still-bound collections list the bulletins in the reverse order of their appearance. The two large volumes have been cataloged in the order listed in their indexes.
