Description: Item is a color lithographed cardboard wheel chart illustrated with four female and four male profiles. The chart contains three discs with profiles and cut-outs that rotate to form phrenological combinations of various facial features and personality descriptions. When the numbers on the three rings align, they form three-digit combinations that describe specific character traits. The text on the chart states that "512 combinations of faces with 512 different character readings may be made." The center of the chart includes a hole with a metal ring that likely formerly contained a metal fastener attached to rotate the dials. Around the ring, the text reads, "Patented May 21, 1922, Frank C. Newell Jr." The bottom right of the chart reads, "Newell Research Institute. 17 West 42[n]d Street, New York City." The verso of the chart describes the science of character reading in detail and lists the three main types of temperaments: mental, vital, and motive, and the seven groups of faculties: domestic, animal, aspiring, moral, self-perfecting, reflective, and perceptive. Illustrations on verso also include phrenological diagrams of human front, back, and side profiles.

Fan with illustration of four Lewes children [realia]
Visual Materials
A folding fan made of fabric and mounted on wooden sticks. Fan includes hand-painted details illustrating a scene of four children walking hand-in-hand. The fan is layered with black fabric on both recto and verso; the recto's top layer of black fabric was cut out into outlines of the children's profiles, revealing a silk layer of fabric underneath that was then hand-painted with varying colors and details. The first child is shown in profile, holding a reticule in hand while leading the other three children who follow. Provenance from the donor suggests that the children depicted are George Henry Lewes's children with his wife Agnes Jervis; based on the family history, however, the children depicted are likely that of Agnes Jervis's with later-partner Thornton Leigh Hunt, as George Henry Lewes did not have any daughters. The approximate date of the item is based on the birth dates of the children.

Manuscripts
The collection contains correspondence and manuscripts. The correspondence and manuscripts are arranged together alphabetically. The correspondence covers the years of 1790-1876, with the majority between 1831 and 1876. The majority of the correspondence is to or from Ellen Sewall Osgood. The collection also contains a scrapbook kept by several members of the Thoreau family. There is a rock labeled opal that was sent to Ellen Sewall Osgood by John Thoreau. The last item is a three-ring binder. It contains photocopies of typed transcriptions of the letters and manuscripts in the collection. There are also five ambrotypes of a man, woman, and three children-two girls and one boy. These ambrotypes were transferred over to Photo Archives on Sept. 23, 2002; call numbers photDAG 149-153.
