Description: An album containing watercolor and pencil illustrations by Anita V. Anfenson of wildflowers and botanical plants native to California. Some of the illustrations also include pastel embellishments. The illustrations date from 1941 to 1944 but are not bound in chronological order. In addition to the year of creation, each specimen is identified by the artist with its common and Latin name, and all illustrations are signed "A. Anfenson" in ink. Illustrations include images of wild hollyhock, California poppy, California bluebells, yucca palm, California thistle, California wild rose, thistle poppy, violet snapdragons, ragwort, woolly milkweed, chicory, jimson weed, and more. Illustrations might have been created by Anfenson while she was employed by the Works Progress Administration.

Box 206, Folder 1 contains a charcoal sketch of four men. Paper is deteriorating and fragile. Box 206, Folders 2-3 contain pastel illustrations of set designs for the Mexican Opera Ballet. Medium is very fragile.

Manuscripts

The collection consists of letters, documents, volumes, and maps related to the business affairs of the Santa Anita Ranch from 1901 to 1904, and the Los Angeles Racing Association from 1907 to 1922. Of the approximately 600 pieces in this collection, 400 are receipts of the Los Angeles Racing Association. Additional material in the collection includes correspondence, diaries, and documents related to the personal and business affairs of Anita M. Baldwin. Also included is the estate settlements of Elias Jackson Baldwin and his elder daughter Clara Baldwin Stocker for the period from 1876 to 1936, including two volumes of city dockets on criminal and civil justice for the city of Arcadia, California. The Addenda includes business papers for Baldwin M. Baldwin, the Los Angeles Racing Association, and Anita M. Baldwin. The Addenda also includes a small amount of personal material related to Anita M. Baldwin such as address books, library and household inventories, poems and other compositions, musical scores, photographs, and scrapbooks.

Charles P. Burney album of drawings

Visual Materials

A contemporary half-leather album with a metal clasp containing illustrations by Charles P. Burney dating from approximately 1801 to 1805. Interior of the album's front and back pages are signed by Burney. End of album signature includes "Mert Coll." below name. Illustrations are in watercolor, pen and ink, and pencil; largely depicting views of various regions in Great Britain (Yorkshire, East Anglia, Wales, etc.), Roman monuments, profiles of people, and animals. Images illustrate cottages, cathedral facades, castles, country landscapes, architectural ruins, horses, goats, dogs, donkeys, and other figures. The sketches are largely titled and dated by the artist. Some sketches of regions in York and Sussex from 1804 include the signature, "P.S.M." Also included in an envelope are two loose sketches from the sketchbook depicting allegorical figures Melpomene and Chronos.

The paintings listed below were identified both by the dealer who sold this album to the Huntington, as well as briefly by three of the Huntington's botanical curators. A number of the identifications are necessarily speculative and might prove incorrect or warrant greater details to identify some of the flowers to the specific level.
